About the presentation

There is increasing pressure within academic environments for writers – scholars – to publish and to publish in places deemed to be more prestigious by various algorithms of however dubious authority. At the same time, there is increasing pressure on the publishers of such academic writings to minimise editorial costs or even do away with forms of editing altogether. While publishers generally are seeking to push back against rising input costs, this pressure on academic publishers’ editorial budgets does seem to be especially pronounced.

What is driving these developments? How are they playing out in practice? And how significant are they for scholars, editors, publishers and readers?
In this presentation, ANU Press Manager Dr Nathan Hollier draws on more than a quarter of a century’s experience in the scholarly publishing world to consider the nature and significance of trends in editing and publishing academic texts.

About Nathan

Dr Nathan Hollier is Manager of ANU Press, a member of the Scholarly and Journals Committee of the Australian Publishers Association, sits on the boards of Learned Publishing [UK] and Aboriginal History Inc., and is the author of many articles and, as editor, two books. He has a PhD in Australian cultural history and is a past CEO and Publisher of Melbourne University Press, Director of Monash University Publishing, Chair of the OL Society, publishers of Overland, Editor of that journal, and was founding Chair of the Small Press Network.
